Training Overview
Effective June 30, 2026, Singleton Smoke School transitioned its traditional classroom lecture to an online training course. First-time attendees are required to complete the online course before attending in-person field certification. Returning attendees may also be required to complete the online course as needed.
Our training combines online instruction with practical field testing to prepare participants for visible emissions evaluation.
Online Lecture Outline
The online lecture is a prerequisite to in-person field training and must be completed before attending the field portion of the course. The lecture covers nine essential topics designed to prepare participants for visible emissions evaluation.
To obtain Method 9 Certification, participants must successfully complete the in-person field certification test. Completion of the online lecture alone does not qualify participants for certification.
In-Person Field Certification Schedule
Participants practice observing white and black smoke opacity before completing the certification test.
Arrival
Please arrive by 8:15 AM for the field certification.

Participant check-in, testing procedures, and field instructions.
White Smoke Familiarization
Practice observing white smoke opacity levels.
White Smoke Certification Test
Run #1: 25 white smoke opacity readings.
Break
Black Smoke Familiarization
Practice observing black smoke opacity levels.
Black Smoke Certification Test
Run #1: 25 black smoke opacity readings.
Test Evaluation & Results
Test forms are graded. Participants who meet the passing requirements are finished; those who do not will proceed to a second testing run.
Field testing times are approximate and may vary due to weather, attendance, and testing requirements.
